IS THAT ALL THERE IS? by Lucy Davidson is an evocative exploration of the human condition, touching on themes of love, loss, and existential questioning. Through fragmented scenes and raw dialogues, the unfinished play delves into the complexities of relationships and the pervasive sense of searching for meaning in life. With characters grappling with profound life changes, including death, miscarriage, and breakups, the narrative unveils the underlying struggles and fleeting moments of clarity. Davidson's work poignantly captures the vulnerability and resilience inherent in the human experience, leaving audiences to ponder the titular question.

Writer Lucy Davidson, comments

As a writer, I’m drawn to themes of love, loss, and the relentless search for meaning—questions that feel both timeless and deeply personal. IS THAT ALL THERE IS? reflects my own ongoing questioning of these ideas: what it means to endure grief, to connect with others, and to keep searching for something more. Through fragmented scenes and raw, unfiltered dialogues, plus a healthy dose of dark humour, the play follows characters navigating profound life shifts—death, miscarriage, breakups—and captures their moments of struggle, fleeting clarity, and existential questioning.

What excites me most about developing this play is the process of deepening the links between these characters, who all exist within the same universe, and to explore how their stories speak to one another. This isn’t just an exploration of its characters’ vulnerabilities and resilience; it’s also a reflection of my own.  Development week reminded me of how we can push the boundaries of stagecraft and discover how theatre’s unique potential for formal experimentation can illuminate emotional truths, even beyond words alone. Developing this piece feels like a way to grapple with my own questions about connection, loss, and meaning—and, hopefully, to create something bold, strange, and resonant in the process.
